GameIdea:TombRobber

Overview

  • Tile-placing and flipping game. If you consider Carcassonne a board game then I guess this would be, too.
  • Players alternate. One plays the explorer/robber moving through the dungeon/tomb trying to get the treasure and take it to the exit. The other places tiles to create the world and traps.
  • You win by being the first explorer to make it back with treasure.

Setup

  • 1. Pick one player to start as the explorer and one as the "DM"
  • 2. Mix up the tiles
  • 3. Place the exit on the table somewhere and put the explorer on it

Each Turn

  • 1. Place Tiles. If there are N empty spaces adjacent to the explorer, the other player pulls out N+1 tiles and places N of them face-down in those spaces. He gets to decide which ones go where and which one goes unused. Unused tiles then go back in the bag.
  • 2. Pick up or Drop Items. The explorer may drop any item he is currently carrying, or start carrying any item on the same tile as him but he can only carry one at a time. Carried objects move with the explorer.
  • 3. Move Explorer. As long as the tile he is on allows it, the explorer may choose move up, down, left, or right one space (or pass). Flip it over, and if it is not blocked, move the explorer there. Otherwise, stay put and choose a different direction.
  • 4. Tile Effects. If a tile, item, or creature has instructions to follow when the explorer enters, leaves, or flips the tile, do those now.
  • 5. Falling. If there is no floor on the tile and no ladder, move the explorer down and go back to step 4. Items and monsters also fall if there is a face-up tile below them.
  • 6. Give up. If the explorer is stuck you can give up. Drop any items, then move the explorer to the exit, place a bomb and a rope at the exit, and the players switch roles.

Other rules

Removing tiles
When a tile is removed, but it back in the bag. If the explorer is on it, he dies. If any items or monsters except the treasure are on it, those are removed as well.

Ideas

  • Different sets of tiles for different themes and different levels of dangerousness
  • Play multiple games with different tile sets. Whoever has the most $$$ worth of treasure at the end wins.

Tile ideas

  • various combinations of having or not having floors, walls (maybe don't bother with ceilings? -- actually maybe better to have tiles of empty space and tiles of stone instead of having walls be part of tile.
  • with and without ladders/trapdoors
  • with and without items/creatures
  • with and without traps
  • conveyor belts
  • locked doors

Items

Some tiles have an icon that tells you to place an item on them when they are flipped face up.
Ideas for items

  • Gun - Neutralize any creature on an adjacent tile.
  • Ropes - Place somewhere to act as bridge or ladder. (Only when dropped, not carried. May be picked up again.)
  • Flare - If next to a face-down tile, flip it.
  • Bomb - 3 moves later, it explodes and removes the tile it is on and any adjacent tiles.
  • Ninja slippers - Immune to creatures while carrying this.
  • Treasure! - Take it to the exit to win!
  • Portable Trapdoor - may choose to go down through the tile this is dropped on (Only when dropped, not carried. May be picked up again.)
  • Hat - If the hat is out, a player may choose to start with the explorer at the hat instead of at the exit.
  • Whip - immune to pit of spikes
  • Wagon - may carry as many items as you want
  • Key - may unlock locked doors
  • Damsel - Must be carried if you enter the tile containing her, replacing any currently held item. Can not be dropped unless at the exit or to pick up a hat.

Traps

  • one-way - whichever direction was used to move into this tile now becomes blocked (one time only)
  • monster - Eats explorer if he is on the same tile or moves and eats him if he is on an unblocked adjacent tile.
  • pit of spikes - Explorer is impaled unless there's a rope/bridge/ladder.
  • snake - Explorer drops whatever he is carrying. Player not playing the explorer may move the explorer.
  • shiny - players switch roles (do not move the explorer back to the exit)
  • conveyor belt - move the explorer left/right
  • crumbling platform - once the explorer moves off, no longer has a floor.
  • switch-controlled doors - can't move through unless a switch is set to off
  • falling stalactite - Explorer is crushed. (one-time-only)
  • explosive gas - If the explorer moves here, remove this tile and any adjacent tiles

Other

  • switch - Explorer may turn it on or off if he is in this tile. Assumed on unless a switch has been set to off.
